The work of young Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter gets its Japan debut in the wake of an acclaimed premiere at the UK’s Brighton Festival. Political Mother presents an increasingly surreal chain of encounters that climax in disturbing but amusing events meant to challenge our preconceptions of what is “normal.” Shechter himself says that the title, with its “proximity of two words that in my logic are not supposed to be next to one another,” hints at what’s to come onstage. Ten dancers will perform to a score played live by a band that includes Shechter, who is a former rock drummer.
