Veteran, Tokyo-based Iranian war correspondent Afshin Valinejad headed north immediately after March 11 and didn’t stop going. Over the past year he’s crisscrossed Fukushima, Miyagi and Iwate Prefectures countless times, handing out relief supplies—and more than a few Persian carpets. Valinejad’s intimacy with survivors and willingness to risk entering the no-go zone to document the plight of Fukushima’s abandoned towns and farms give his photography special relevance and poignancy.
