After an extended period of construction, the Nezu Museum has finally taken the wraps off its new digs. Designed by architect Kuma Kengo, the building creates a contemporary setting for founder and railway magnate Keichiro Nezu’s collection of traditional Asian arts and crafts. The Aoyama institution celebrates its reopening by displaying the centerpiece of its collection, National Treasure Wachi Waterfall, a scroll from the 13th-14th century Kamakura period. Also on offer are artworks that reflect on sacred aspects of nature, and ink landscape paintings depicting the utopian visions of literati painters, scenes of famous spots throughout Japan heralded in waka poetry, and paradisiacal visions of birds and flowers.
