In a country where B-sides usually consist of album tracks and karaoke versions, what a rarity 4 All Ages represents. Comprising a selection of B-sides from Shakalabbits’ singles between their 2000 debut and 2006’s Monologue (since which the B-sides have been—yep—album tracks and karaoke versions), it’s a romp through the Tokyo punk four-piece’s colorful history.
The band’s style has evolved from the throwaway ska-punk of “Swiss Mammy” to the meaty basslines and New Wave undertones of “d.d,” and the quality of their songwriting has improved too. Covers of “The Wild One” and “That Thing You Do” are also creative, although, as the tracks on 4 All Ages are sequenced in reverse order, the compilation starts strong but unravels toward the end. Still, while not an ideal introduction to the band, it’s a nice bit of fan service.
