Geeks in Japan: 6 months, 3 weeks ago · ViewBlizzard’s World of Warcraft gets free-to-play (until level 20). Valve’s Team Fortress 2 gets free-to-play (pay for extra weapons and stuff). That’s an interesting trend from the heavy weights of the industry. It might be a strong blow to the smaller competitors. It might also be a good occasion for me to reinstall a Windows machine.
Actually, reading about Blizzard made me want to revisit Diablo 2. Too bad the CD is back in France. Has anyone around played it? What build did you enjoy the most?

Geeks in Japan: 7 months, 1 week ago · ViewWell, unfortunately the Wonder Woman pilot that was pitched to NBC was rejected. I’ve been hoping that with all the superhero films of the last thirteen years that a Wonder Woman film would eventually be done after the Batman and Superman movies, but that may not come to fruition. I’m actually surprised that even Green Lantern got a movie before Wonder Woman did, when she’s more of an iconic (and more well-known to the non-comic book fan mainstream) character than GL is. But I guess Green Lantern has more flashy big sci-fi special effects potential and appeal than a flying Amazonian feminist with a golden lasso that forces bound men to tell the truth does. And the bigwigs in Hollywood have doubts that a female superhero movie would do well enough in the box offices. But anyway, due to the unlikelihood of a Wonder Woman film in the near future, a new TV series would have been the next best thing.

Geeks in Japan: 7 months, 2 weeks ago · View”Super 8” opened in Japan last weekend, a really good sci-fi story written and directed by J.J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. It reminded me a lot of such early Spielberg-related movies as ”Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” ”E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” ”Goonies,” and ”Batteries not Included,” but mixed with ”Cloverfield” (which was produced by J.J. Abrams). It had a really nice nostalgic feel to it with the characters, who were all great. I highly recommend this film, a good story, visually exciting, and funny to boot. A great watch.
@S3! I’ve already watched Super 8. It was good!
@Nubeauty ”Super 8” is great film.
I wish I had an alien pal that I could help to get back to his home planet.
Or perhaps I am the alien who needs help to get back to his home planet.

Geeks in Japan: 7 months, 3 weeks ago · View@guilhem @justterrible As ye may have already heard, the bad news is Marvel has announced that they’ll soon be killing off Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, at the hands of the Green Goblin. The good news is, it’s the Ultimate version of Spider-Man that’s getting the axe, and this won’t affect the mainstream Marvel Universe Peter Parker/Spider-Man appearing in the original ”Amazing Spider-Man” comics.
I can’t say this is totally unexpected. As of late, Marvel has been trying to really differentiate their Ultimate Marvel Universe from the mainstream Marvel Universe by doing things in the former that they can’t do in the latter, such as killing off a lot of their most iconic characters to make room for newer versions. The ”Ultimatum” storyline alone from a couple years ago itself killed off such major heroes as Professor X, Wolverine, Cyclops, Beast, Nightcrawler, Angel, Scarlet Witch, Hank Pym, Wasp, Doctor Strange, Dazzler, and Longshot, as well as the villains Doctor Doom, Magneto, and Blob. Other Major Ultimate Marvel Universe characters that have been killed off over the years as well include Daredevil, Gambit, Bishop, Doctor Octopus, and Juggernaut.
From what Marvel’s hinting at, as with some of the other characters in the Ultimate Marvel Universe that have been killed off, there will likely be a new Ultimate Spider-Man to rise up in the future to take Peter Parker’s place.

Geeks in Japan: 7 months, 3 weeks ago · View@guilhem Rented a few DVDs this weekend and last.
”The Expendables” and ”Machete” were both great action movies which made me miss those good ol’ days of wanton violence involving anti-heroes taking down the bad guys. I especially loved Machete for it’s comedy. Robert Rodriguez has been one of my top favorite directors for a while. Actor Danny Trejo was just perfect for the role, and I’m surprised that he’s now 67 and Machete was his first actual starring role. I’m pleased to hear two more sequels are already being planned. And as for ”The Expendables,” the only thing I would have wished for were bigger roles for Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis rather than just cameos, and if Steven Segal and Jean-Claude Van Damme could have been fit in somewhere it would have been all the more epic.
Disney’s ”TRON: Legacy” was a visually appealing sci-fi romp. And though I never had any strong feelings for the original, I really did like this one and the soundtrack by Daft Punk was really fitting. And though it was a bit out of season, I checked out Disney’s computer-animated ”A Christmas Carol” featuring the voice of Jim Carrey among others. I liked it, though I may be a bit biased seeing as I’ve been a fan of Jim Carry since his days on ”In Living Color” and I don’t think I’ve yet to see a movie starring him that I didn’t like.
In other news, I downloaded and began playing ”Iris Online,” a free anime-style fantasy MMORPG published by gPotato. I’m still pretty early on, but so far it seems like an OK game. The anime-style artwork is cutesy and bright, which may be a turn-on for some while a turn-off for others. You’re able to choose from one of three races: humans, elves, and hybrids (which basically look like humans with fuzzy ears and stripes). Each race determines which classes you can start off with. Humans can be physical attackers or magic users (either offensive spells or healing). Hybrids can be physical attackers or stealth/agility-type backstabbers. And elves can be ranged attackers or magic users. I haven’t gotten very in depth into the game yet, but so far it seems like your usual fantasy type MMORPG: talk to NPCs, accept quests, collect stuff, form parties, kill stuff, level up, unlock classes, and that kind of thing. Knowing myself I’ll get bored with it within a few weeks, as I have yet to play an MMORPG that held my attention for more than a few months. But we’ll see. And at least the game seems to have a large player base. I’ve tried some games that often felt completely empty except for a handful of dedicated players. But Iris Online seems to have no shortage on players which is nice.

Geeks in Japan: 8 months ago · ViewFor movie fans, this weekend in Japan the films ”Red Riding Hood” and ”X-Men: First Class” have opened. I caught ”Red Riding Hood” and wasn’t surprised that it was quite similar to the Twilight films (which shouldn’t be too much of a surprise, since the director of Red Riding Hood, Catherine Hardwicke, had also directed Twilight and the film seemed to be aiming for the same target audience). It wasn’t a great movie, but wasn’t bad either. But that might not have been a good thing. The Twilight films were so bad in my opinion that watching them was so funny that you had to laugh because you couldn’t believe that they weren’t supposed to be satire. But Red Riding Hood just wasn’t as over the top to make it so bad that it’s good or a guilty pleasure, but wasn’t cool enough to be taken completely seriously or make you say ”screw it, that was just plain awesome!” (which ”Sucker Punch” did for me). But it was what it was, and I liked it overall and didn’t regret the price of the late-night reduced ticket.
And speaking of superhero movies, as DC Comics has been trying to catch up with Marvel with the upcoming Green Lantern and rebooted Superman movie, I wonder to myself why not Wonder Woman? Surely Wonder Woman’s a more well-known character than Green Lantern is. In fact, though Superman and Batman are DC’s two most iconic characters, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman pretty much make up their main trinity. I for one would love to see a live-action Wonder Woman movie. Even the animated Wonder Woman movie that was released straight to DVD a couple years ago was pretty bad ass and I’d recommend it.

Geeks in Japan: 8 months ago · ViewI started playing a Facebook app called ”Monster Galaxy,” a pet monster RPG from the folks at Gaia Online (which itself is kind of half SNS and half forum based online RPG). The game is all right, graphically better than a lot of Facebook app’s I’ve played. The general theme and gameplay is pretty much identical to the Pokemon series and other similar games: There was a big earthquake, and strange creatures called Moga started falling from the sky and running amok. You play as a novice Moga Tamer, who starts out with one Moga (which you get to chose among a number of choices), but you soon after capture more by battling wild Moga and tossing Star Seeds at them when they’ve been weakened. The Moga all seem to be specialized as either attackers (high offense with low defense), defenders (high defense with low offense), or balanced (equal but average offense and defense). And each Moga has a zodiac sign, which takes the place of elements but has the same function of giving each Moga a type advantage or disadvantage against other Moga when using special attacks or taking damage from them.
So, all in all, if you’ve got free time to kill and want something else to do on Facebook, I’d say Monster Galaxy isn’t that bad. There are certainly less interesting ways you could be wasting your time. Though I suppose it would only be even mildly appealing to those who are at least somewhat interested in pet monster genre games.
One downside to the game though – which is almost to be expected – is that most of the Moga are a little goofy-looking and/or pretty cliched. I haven’t seen any that don’t look a lot like other generic pet monster things that we’ve seen in similar forms countless times before in other games. That or the names are kind of silly (such as a lamb Moga called ”Lambo,” but at least you can give them your own unique names). But I think it’s all excusable, as complete originality is kind of difficult when trying to design loads of little critters (I’ve tried it myself and couldn’t crank out more than ten or so imagined creatures), so for a Facebook App I wouldn’t be expecting too much anyway.
So help random strangers, complete quests, catch, train, and battle monsters. You already know what to do here.

Geeks in Japan: 8 months, 1 week ago · ViewFor those of you who like zombies as much as I do, unfortunately there really aren’t any actual zombie MMORPGs out there to download (at least none that I have found). There are a few browser-based zombie games though. Truth be told however, known of those are particularly exciting, as they are often very text-heavy, require you to use your own imagination, and have limits on how long you can play per day. But nonetheless, if you’re still curious about some zombie-related online gaming, a few games you might want to look into are:
Urban Dead: http://www.urbandead.com/
Zombie Pandemic: http://www.zombiepandemic.com/
Dead Awaken: http://www.deadawaken.com/If you’re into shooter games, then you might like:
Zombie Frontier: http://www.deadfrontier.com/
And if you’re looking for a zombie strategy game:
Corpse Craft: Incident at Weardd Academy – http://www.corpsecraft.com/
Corpse Craft is not really a MMORPG, is it? Unless it evolved since last time I played it, it’s only duel-based.
And, for a much simpler no-strings-attached no-brain zombie game, you can try Zombus. There’s a zombie outbreak, and you have a bus. A big, heavy bus. Have fun.
http://jayisgames.com/games/zombus/I’ve personally only played Urban Dead, Zombie Pandemic, and Dead Awaken. I got tired of Zombie Pandemic and Dead Awaken pretty quickly, but I’ve been playing Urban Dead for several months now and still play it. Never tried Zombie Frontier or Corpse Craft. When I came across them they didn’t seem to really be what I was looking for.
It would be awesome if there really was an actual zombie MMORPG. Something along the lines of playing survivors in a zombie infested region. Starting of in a small town, then moving your way to the big cities and other areas. Teaming up with other survivors to take on the undead as you forage for supplies and all that.

Geeks in Japan: 8 months, 1 week ago · ViewSo for those who are interested in superhero comics and haven’t already heard, DC Comics announced recently that as of August they are restarting all 52 of their current titles. The first title will be Justice League #1 to come out in August, with the other titles debuting in September and the months to follow. Supposedly all the characters, costumes, and backstories will be revamped to be more modern.
I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, some of these characters are like 70 years old, so they need to be rebooted every now and then to keep them fresh, modern, relevant, and accessible to the newer generations. On the other hand, it gets annoying when all those intriguing storylines and character changes and development you enjoyed is just thrown out the window and is no longer relevant.
Yeah kinda sounds like a marketing stunt to get old fans back without paying scenario writers. But I don’t know enough, so wait and see.
In the last couple of years, the DC series I’ve most been interested in are Superman/Batman and Teen Titans. I think the Superman/Batman series is not considered part of the regular DC Universe continuity, so I wonder if that series will be affected.

Finished reading the Kick-Ass graphic novel. In some ways, I actually liked the movie better than the comics they were based on (which were a lot more depressing than the movie was). But in some ways, the the fact that it was more realistic than the movie made it more interesting too.

I read the comic book first, and I was surprised at how mild the movie was in comparison. Which, I think is a good thing. It’s much more fun, and totally nonsensical. to be honest, I was wary about the movie, expecting such disturbing scenes…
I think they’re both very good, but for a different audience.Have you read the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels and watched the movie? If so, what did ye think of those changes? Though I found the deeper emotional connections and development of the graphic novels more interesting (especially the characters like Kim Pine who didn’t play as big a role in the movie as well as Envy), I did find the action much more exciting to watch in live-action form. Also, some of the lines from the graphic novel were a lot funny when said by Michael Cera to me than when I read them in the graphic novels (particularly the bit about eating bread).
I have never even heard of it to be honest. I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for it.
Scott Pilgrim was a graphic novel series that came out from 2004 to 2010 by Canadian comic book writer/artist Bryan Lee O’Malley. A movie based on the six graphic novels came out in 2010 as well (and was released in theaters here in Japan as of April or May, though only at one theater in Shibuya). It’s pretty much an action-romance-comedy, and I highly recommend it especially if you’re an old school video gamer, as the series answers the question ”what if real life were more like a video game?” heh.
Also, here’s the link to the official Scott Pilgrim website for more info:
And this is the movie trailer:
Looks like an excuse for ridiculously over-the top special effects. Seems pretty cool, I’ll make sure to watch it.
Speaking of movies based on or inspired by other source material, later this year we’ll have ”Red Riding Hood,” ”Thor” (both of which have already opened in the last few months in the West but will hit Japanese theaters soon), ”X-Men: First Class,” ”Green Lantern,” ”Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” ”Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” ”Captain America: The First Avenger,” ”The Smurfs,” ”Conan the Barbarian,” ”The Three Musketeers,” ”Jack and Jill,” ”The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” ”Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked,” ”Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” and ”The Adventures of Tintin” among others.
There will be a number of sequels/prequels/remakes/spin-offs coming out this year as well, such as ”Cars 2,” ”Winnie the Pooh,” ”Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” ”Final Destination 5,” ”Fright Night,” ”Spy Kids: All the Time in the World,” ”The Thing,” ”Paranormal Activity 3,” ”A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas,” ”Puss in Boots,” ”Happy Feet Two,” ”The Muppets,” ”Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol,” and ”Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.”
We should also have some interesting movies with J.J. Abrams ”Super 8” (which looks like a darker version of Spielberg’s classics like ”E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” and ”Close Encounters of the Third Kind”) and ”John Carpenter’s The Ward” (his first feature film in like ten years or something).
As a frequent movie-goer, I for one am pleased at having so many movies to look forward to this year.
