We were so impressed by a recent lunch at Chao Thai that we made sure to grab a meishi on the way out. Only then did we realize that this new restaurant in Yokohama’s Bay Quarter has a sister branch near our office in Shibuya—the same place that’s our go-to spot for a midday pad thai fix. The new location offers a similar menu of Thai standards, including a wide selection of appetizers, curries, noodles and rice dishes. As befits its upscale surroundings, though, portions are smaller and prices are higher… but not by much. Weekday lunch courses start at ¥850 (compared to ¥680 in Shibuya), which includes a main dish plus Thai-style salad, green salad and dessert. Add ¥100 for large portions or ¥150 for coffee. On weekends, the deal includes just a main dish and soup, but for an extra couple hundred yen, you can substitute a very decent tom yam kung. In addition to the pad thai, we recommend the minced pork with basil (pad krapao), but if you’re looking for something more offbeat, the à la carte menu offers a full complement of dozens of dishes—all well under ¥2,000. In clement weather, Chao Thai’s outdoor terrace offers a decent view of the Yokohama Bay area.
