“It’s good to have connections”. That’s the thought that crossed our minds as we slid improbably tender strips of Saga beef into our mouths at newly opened yakiniku restaurant Hachi Hachi. Thanks to direct shipments from their parent restaurant in Kyushu, the owners are able to offer cuts of wagyu at extremely low prices—kalbi goes for ¥480 and rosu for ¥680. A limited menu of select cuts from premium Japanese beef is also available, including kalbi (¥980), harami (¥1,500) and tongue (¥1,500). Besides the red meat, Hachi Hachi serves up Kagoshima jidori (¥480-¥580) and pork (¥480-¥680); don’t miss the Hakata yakiton kalbi, a thick bone-in sparerib (¥580). The horumon (innards) selection includes beef liver (¥480) and an excellent marucho (small intestines), which is limited to 15 servings a day (¥580). All the meats are cooked on table-top braziers and served with a variety of dipping sauces and condiments, like yuzu-black pepper. Other Korean dishes include three varieties each of kimchi and namul (¥380; sampler platters ¥800) and hot-stone bibimbap (¥880). Hachi Hachi is also notable for its spacious interior—the convivial, high-ceilinged space is sure to attract after-work partiers, and even families will find it an inviting spot for some grilled-meat action. Twelve-dish dinner plans start at just ¥2,500.
