RF1 Sozai

Whoever said that “good things come to those who wait” is an ass. On Christmas Day 2008, the longest lines in our local depachika were at deli counter RF1 Sozai, which offers an array of dishes using locally sourced vegetables, meat and seafood. One particularly popular item was the terrine salad—lovely-looking cubes of gourmet terrine de campagne tossed with vinegared greens. “Fantastic,” we thought, “just the thing to nosh on during our New Year’s layabout.” When we returned the following day, however, the salad wasn’t on offer, and the staff dropped the bomb that it was an Xmas-only item. “Wait till next year,” we told ourselves. Fast-forward 364 days, and we’re first in line on Christmas morning 2009 in anticipation of some terrine-salad goodness… only to be told that the dish wasn’t a part of this year’s menu. If we ever needed a reminder to seize the day, strike while the iron is hot, etc., etc., this was it. As disappointed as we were to miss out on a treat we’d waited a whole year to enjoy, we managed to console ourselves with some of RF1’s other excellent seasonal goodies, including chicken Kiev and white asparagus with béchamel. But it just wasn’t the same.

RF1 Sozai has dozens of locations in the Tokyo area, including the food floors of all major department stores. See www.rockfield.co.jp for a list (Japanese). Carpe diem.
