Hiasobi isn’t the only teppanyaki restaurant that does a fantastic lunch. When we first visited Sasashige in Nishi-Azabu shortly after its opening last spring, dinner was just about perfect. Spacious and stylish, the restaurant drew a fun crowd, and the creative menu was prepared by a France-trained chef. The only thing missing, we thought, was lunch. Not anymore. Sasashige’s newly introduced midday service is one of the best deals going—four different menus for just ¥1,000, including all the 10-grain rice you can eat. Options include a handmade wagyu burger (only eight servings available each day) with a choice of grated daikon topping or balsamic vinegar sauce; salmon à la meunière with housemade tartar sauce, lemon and capers; a medley of steamed seasonal vegetables and pork; and sautéed “Iwai Tori” chicken from Iwate. During a recent visit, the thick, perfectly done salmon fillet was accompanied by a dollop of buttery mashed potatoes, grilled cabbage, pickles and miso soup. Word has definitely gotten out about the lunch—both the teppan counter at the front of the restaurant and the lounge area in the rear have their share of customers. Soft jazz and prompt service complete the scene. Luckily for us, Sasashige is just up the road from Metropolis HQ, so it’s bound to become our regular lunch spot. We’ll see you there.
