“Morning wood” is something gentlemen have when they wake up. It’s also the translation of Asadachi (1-2-14 Nishi-Shinjuku; http://meturl.com/asadachi), a hole-in-the-wall food hut whose specialty is extraordinary stamina food. As one of the cluster of ramshackle izakaya in Shomben Yokocho (“Piss Alley”)—now known more poetically as Omoide Yokocho (“Memory Lane”)—Asadachi offers seasonal treats from across the nation. Some of the offerings, in alphabetical order, are: acorn barnacle, basashi, frog, monkfish liver, pig testicle and uterus, salamander, sea squirts and turtle feet. The dishes and prices depend on what’s freshly available at the market.
