By day, Yokohama’s cozy Bar Kahului (http://bar-kahului.net; 46-4 Nishi Dori, Fukutomi-cho, Naka-ku) caters to local lunchers with ample servings of soba-meshi, an off-price dish of diced yakisoba noodles and stir-fried rice that was a hit in Kobe back in the early 2000’s. At night, the venue becomes a “girl’s bar,” complete with a Hawaiian-themed interior and ¥500 drinks. Open since January 12, Bar Kahului is said to be the first eatery in Japan to specialize in soba-meshi, serving up the dish in several ways: plain (¥500), Chinese-style (¥600), miso (¥600) and curry (¥700). Bar Kahului has a casual feel that’s helped along by inexpensive bottles of wine and shochu.
