This is just the thing to bring drunk husbands home, take granny shopping, or send the kids off to school on. Honda’s new “personal mobility” device looks like a unicycle, but there’s no pedaling involved. All you need to do to zip around on it—sideways as well as forward and back—is lean in the direction in which you want to go… providing you aren’t sumo-sized. Honda says the U3-X was designed to be small, safe and unobtrusive enough to mingle with pedestrians without bowling anyone over. An array of tiny motor-controlled wheels is packed inside a bigger wheel, allowing the device to swerve in any direction. It stands upright on its own and maintains its own balance as it scoots along at a speed of up to 6km/hr. The U3-X weighs less than 10kg and is powered by a lithium-ion battery that lets it run for an hour on a full charge.
