“The beads and Birkenstocks vision of organic doesn’t fly anymore. It needs to be more urban and sophisticated.”
So says August Hergesheimer, co-founder of OnlyPureProducts.com. This English-language website sells organic anti-aging supplements that are 100 percent free of artificial or chemical ingredients and pesticides—a step up from ordinary organic standards, which allow for trace residues. Rather than offering up a dizzying selection of specific cures (the bane of the self-diagnosing pill popper) or preachy lifestyle mandates, the Tokyo-based company stocks only a handful of nutrient-dense products that can give anyone a boost.
“If someone can eat an organic diet every day, that would be best, but that is expensive and we want to be able to enjoy life too,” says Hergesheimer. Key ingredients, he continues, can efficiently combat not only lifestyle-related dietary woes but also free radicals in the city air we breathe.
Tanned and toned and looking much younger than his 47 years, Hergesheimer grew up in both Japan and California before getting a PhD in nutritional science in New Zealand and returning to Tokyo in 2002. He follows his own advice and adheres to a daily regimen of Only Pure’s VegePower Plus and freeze-dried 100 percent Acai supplements.
“For optimal performance, the human diet needs green leafy vegetables the most,” explains Hergesheimer, noting that the mineral-rich VegePower Plus includes 16 different land and sea veggies such as alfalfa, wheat grass, spirulina and kelp.
