Why can’t learning nihongo be a hobby rather than a struggle?

Japanese sits across from you. You’ve found yourself drawn in by his little ways, the words he speaks: so alien, and yet so beautiful! A language you’ve found fascinating like no other.

He looks you in the eye, and asks: “Please fill in the blank. Ni tsuite, or ni totte?

You leap up. “That’s it,” you say. “Always with the questions! I’m getting a divorce.”

Here’s the received wisdom of learning Japanese:

#1: “Want to learn Japanese? It’s difficult. You’ve practically failed already.”
#2: “Fill in the blanks. Memorize this list. Write these kanji a thousand times.”

Small wonder Japanese has a reputation for flummoxing even the most ardent learners. From day one, the language is set up as an unassailable mountain with no summit.

Yet some have found an easier ascent. I call it the “dark side,” because it’s the easier way to power in the Force—I mean, Japanese. You can stick with Yoda, meditate and lift rocks in the air, or you can choose the quick and easy path, as Vader did, and choke people and shoot lightning bolts.

And what’s wrong with that?

“Khatzumoto,” of the website All Japanese All The Time, eschewed classes in favor of self-study. As a successful dieter swaps breakfast waffles for muesli, Khatzumoto—while living in the US—replaced Western culture with Japanese. Watching a Hollywood movie? He saw the Japanese dub. Procrastinating on Wikipedia? It was on the Japanese one.

After two years of rigorously studying these materials, he became fluent enough to land a job with a Japanese software company, without taking a single class.

True, Khatzumoto’s a rare example. Many set out to learn Japanese through real media and end up floundering. But coupled with the framework of a supporting syllabus, it might just be the best way to learn. After all, isn’t the culture why we love this place?

This is a concept lost in the teaching of Japanese, with its emphasis on dry textbook language. With kanji, I was taught to learn by muscle-burning repetition. This I tried, but seconds after the weekly test I’d forgotten half of them. I knew about mnemonics—visualizing characters as stories—and I found some success, but my stories were too vague, or I’d mix up elements. I lacked a system.

Enter James Heisig, with his book Remembering the Kanji. Heisig—now a Nanzen Institute professor—taught himself kanji when he arrived here in 1977 using two innovations. First, he broke characters down into primitives with a concrete meaning and constructed stories around them. In an early example, he asks us to memorize 冒, risk, as mothers telling us not to look into the sun, 日, because of risk to our eyes, 目. After training the reader with a few hundred pre-concocted stories, Heisig lets us loose on all 2,042 characters.

His second stroke of genius was to arrange kanji in a sensible order. Nobody can quite remember why Japanese schoolchildren must learn 導 (guidance) a year before its component 寸 (a unit of measurement), but there’s no reason a foreign learner should. 館 (hall) is #1472 in Heisig’s book—late for such a common character, but it only appears after the learner knows all the components within it.

The system has its drawbacks: how you can visualize a “state of mind” as a concrete object, I have no idea. And it may seem a cheap shortcut—but that’s because it is. The system gives you only an English keyword, not the Japanese readings. As Heisig points out, that puts you on the same level as a Chinese speaker—who already understands the semantics—and prepares you to pick up the readings from actual texts. You know, the fun stuff.

Now don’t get me wrong: I don’t believe in quick fixes. Learning Japanese takes hard work, and there’s a place for classroom learning, particularly at the beginner level. The trouble is, once you get past the basics, much of what goes on in language schools seems trite, superfluous, and—worst of all—dull. But as long as Japanese pedagogy is trapped in this strict Japanese-is-difficult mindset, it won’t change. It’s time it does. - By Matt Durrant

The Test

Since its introduction in 1984, the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) has become the most widely recognized standard of, well, Japanese proficiency. It’s also been a perennial source of grumbling amongst nihongo learners, perceived as fusty and more than a little anal. This year, the test is being subjected to a major overhaul that some argue is way overdue. Among the most notable changes is that the four levels have swelled to five, with a new one squeezed between the old Levels 2 and 3. The new test also promises to place increased emphasis on “communicative competence” and a revised scoring system. Levels 1-3 will be held twice this year (as will Levels 4 and 5 from next year), and late risers will be pleased to hear that the tests won’t start until after noon. Application forms for the July 4 test go on sale from March 26, and the application deadline is April 30.

When Nagiko Umino started out as a Japanese language teacher, she didn’t realize how much she would end up learning from her foreign students. Last year, she released Nihonjin no Shiranai Nihongo (“Japanese the Japanese Don’t Know”), a collection of manga-style stories based on her years of experience. The book was a surprise hit, topping the sales charts for 2009, and a second volume has just been released.

Nihonjin no Shiranai Nihongo has caused quite a stir. How does that make you feel?
First, I’m happy that more people have become aware of Japanese teaching as a profession. I’ve also gotten lots of comments from readers saying that they were inspired to study more about Japan and Japanese, so I’m glad that I could be the cause of that interest.

What are some other surprising things that your students have said or done?
Once, when we went on a field trip to the mountains, one of my students caught a turtle by the river and said to me, “I’m going to take it home and eat it.” On another trip to a lake, one of the female students went swimming. Even though it was only May, she had brought along a swimsuit and even a swimming cap (and of course, we’d warned the students beforehand not to swim).

You teach foreign students from many different countries. Have you noticed certain strengths and weaknesses depending on their native languages?
Many of my Chinese students have trouble using particles like ka, wo and he. But in the advanced levels, where the text involves lots of kanji, they are able to understand more easily. Korean students seem to have problems with pronunciation (for example, “tsu” becomes “chu”). But the [Korean] rules about formal keigo speech are very similar to Japan, so they understand that quickly and use it correctly.
With European and American students, kanji of course is a big hurdle. But students who memorize kanji because they think it’s interesting do advance quickly. Unlike students from Asian countries, when Western students are here, Japanese people won’t always speak to them in Japanese. Because of this, many of them seem to have trouble increasing their conversation skills.

Do you think Japanese people’s language ability has gotten worse compared to the past?
I wouldn’t say it’s gotten “worse,” but I certainly think that people use less polite speech (myself included). If you watch movies from 40-50 years ago, there are many scenes where even parents and children speak to each other using very polite expressions. They talk more slowly, and it feels like they use a more varied vocabulary than we do now. Compared to back then, I think that now we have many more newly created words, and the tempo of our speech has increased, but the words lack the same flavor and resonance. Whether that’s “worse” or not, I don’t know…

Thinking about how foreigners are taught Japanese, versus how it is taught to Japanese people, do you think that there are problems or methods that should be changed in the current Japanese language education system?
With both Japanese and foreign students, I think the teaching methods need to be tailored to suit the goals of each student and their reasons for studying Japanese. Foreign students tend to come from an environment where they can choose different study methods based on their goals, but Japanese students—especially in elementary and junior high schools—aren’t really learning “Japanese.” It’s extremely important to learn your native language properly; I think that’s a very fundamental thing, and I think some measures need to be taken at the national level.

What do you think about the recent revisions to the Japanese Language Proficiency Test?
From a teaching perspective, the changes to the test will make things tougher, but I think it’s a good thing for the students. They are going to be judged from a different perspective, so their study tools will have to change as well. Until now, memorization has been the main focus, but with the revisions, I think that’s going to change.

What do you think is the most important thing for foreign students learning Japanese?
Well, I think this holds true for anyone learning a foreign language, but… Language is something that can never be separated from the culture of that area. If you want to become more fluent, it’s important to work hard at understanding Japan’s culture and customs, too. If you can think “that’s different,” or “that’s interesting,” then studying will probably come a little more easily.

    Great article. I loved all the hints and tips contained here-in. Honestly, I learned more Japanese from Deathnote, Evangelion, and Ranma than I have from text books. Granted, I can’t apply most of it to my day-to-day (「僕は新世界の神になります』、『お前は、もう死んでいる』、『逃げちゃだめだ』) but those are fantastic ice-breakers at parties.

    Also, I want to direct your attention to two more apps.

    For the DS – Kanji Sonomama
    This is a decent dictionary and heaps cheaper than a dedicated denshi-jisho. Also, because of the touch screen, if you see a kanji on the train you don’t know, you can write it in by hand and it will tell you the translation. However, you do need to have a basic knowledge of stroke order if you want it to register correctly.

    For the iPhone – Japanese
    This is a terrific (though expensive) dictionary. It is incredibly well organized and the search function is terrific. I am always flipping between Japanese e-mail and the app to understand what people are talking about (using the copy paste on unknown Kanji). Also, this app is great because it has a lot of bizarro terms that are either hyper specific or massively out-dated. I have had fun at plenty of parties scrolling through at random, stopping without looking and then challenging the people around me to use the phrase in a sentence.

    To give you an example of how deep this dictionary goes, a quick random flip right now yielded:

    撤兵 (てっぺい) – Withdrawal of troops
    数値パラメタ (すうちぱらめた)- Numeric Parameter
    暴発 (ぼうはつ)- spontaneous discharge

    As an app I use daily for business AND fun, I can say it’s worth the steep price.

    My experience with trying to learn Japanese with native speakers, both in Japan and in the U.S., has been that the Japanese by and large are poor language teachers. Even at Columbia University, a school with a diverse Japanese studies curriculum with some major names in the field (Keane, Curtis, and Gluck to name three), the Japanese language program there, staffed entirely by native speakers, was run pretty much the way English language programs are run at Japanese schools – a lot of grammar exercises and rote memorization. I had a teacher in my first quarter count an answer wrong because I had translated mainichi as everyday instead of daily. I knew I was in trouble after that. This is not to say that other schools don’t do a good job. But if a school like Columbia has a screwed-up program . . .

    My best Japanese language instructor ever was Elizabeth Hanson. She taught at Seattle University. She’d lived in Japan, had worked as a translator and had a common sense approach to the language.

    I really think there is some sort of cultural block that prevents the Japanese from being able to teach language. Though reading and writing Japanese is a challenge (even to the Japanese), the spoken language is no more difficult than any Western language I’ve ever studied. In fact, given that it’s nominally limited to 52 sounds, it’s easier phonetically than most languages. Of course, with all languages, you can spend years in classes, but without immersi0n in the target culture/language, you’ll never get very far.

    If you paid for a Japanese dictionary on the iPhone/iPod Touch – I feel sorry for you!

    Kotoba! Is easy to use, has every kanji, allows romaji, kana, kanji, English input, has countless examples (provided in kana/kanji or romaji) to help you use new words which are being expanded with every update and it’s FREE.

    Yes, FREE.

    Think about it – a dedicated electronic dictionary with a black and grey pixelly screen – from 15,000 to 40,000 Yen.

    OR an iPod Touch (19,800¥) and Kotoba (Zero¥) which does everything and more….

    PS: I don’t work for Apple or Kotoba, honest!

    The secret of my success in Japan is to speak English at all times. if I speak Japanese that puts me at a disadvantage, but if I insist on speaking English (and why shouldn’t I as ALL Japanese have done at least 3 years of English in High School) then the advantage lies with me. Plus many Japanese are grateful to have a chance to speak English. To learn Nihongo well enough to have the whip hand would take me until I’m about 95.

    karoshi – your secret to success is not to even try? wow… I don’t even know what to say that would be acceptable to print. Japanese learn English in high-school for a few years – so what? The country of Japan has a national language – Japanese!

    People in the US usually spend a few years studying French or German – what if I went to US and said “The secret to my success is to refuse to speak English, after all, half of Americans should have taken a few years of French.” No, you get with the program, and speak English. In Japan, that means speaking Japanese.

    I know plenty of non-Japanese who went to Japanese colleges and graduated with no problem, it just takes a little effort.

    At any rate, I wanted to add to this list, the web site/iPhone program smart.fm. This was originally for studying English, but can be used now to study Japanese and other languages,

    It may be a huge shock, but there is a field of linguistics known as SLA— second language acquisition—in which many of the issues in acquiring a second language are covered. This seems not to have spread to the way Japanese is generally taught in Japan with many seeming to forget that the purpose of language is communication and not to provide a puzzle for the clueless to make tedious tests which do not evaluate for communicative competence.

    It would be just dandy if the new JLPT does test for communicative competence, but unless it includes an oral interview and ideally an essay type interview, it will not be testing communicative ability directly. There’s sort of an old cliche’ “Test what is being tested,” that applies even to Japanese, unbelievable as it may seem. I have yet to pass Level 1, but that’s because I see absolutely no need to waste any more of my life studying nonsense that evaluates only passive skills and requires endless hours of mind-numbing tedium for little more than a number on a sheet of paper. (If I get in to a situation where my Japanese is not adequate, will anyone be impressed if I pull out that silly certificate?)

    I have been able to improve my Japanese by actual use in all four areas—reading, writing, speaking, and listening—by actually immersing myself in those areas as much as possible with the help of a private tutor. It is amazing how much more motivated one gets if he/she is interested in an article compared to being forced to read some dry, meaningless dribble that a test-prep book writer forces on you in order to ask 27 equally lifeless questions about it.

    As far as texts are concerned, most Japan-produced texts seem to be aimed at students of university age on home stay programs. Japanese for Busy People is an exception, but it ends at about the lower intermediate level, and goes to “Japanese for Professionals” which takes and entirely different approach and regresses back to the 1940s and tedious, motivation draining, soul-killing memorization.

    One of the best texts (from the University of Hawaii) Aozora, Intermediate-Advanced, although a bit dated is based on modern knowledge of language learning and teaching.

    Good teachers can be found, and if you find good private teacher who is willing to work with you, and adapt to what you need, I think the benefits are worth the cost. And it ain’t ever going to be easy for most. There is no magic method, no always “fun” “fast” and “simple” way to acquire any language. Run away from any school or teacher that claims otherwise (or ask them to prove it with non-company produced evidence based on modern research.)

    I would like to rescind my previous blathering. I’m with karoshi. Nothing gives you the upper hand in business and interpersonal relations like not giving a good god-damn what the other person is trying to say.

    Boku1 – Sometimes I look at the JLPT and I get to thinkin’. The test might not be simply a test of Japanese language ability but of Japanese Culture ability. The typical foreigner reaction to testing like JLPT is “This is useless bullshit that tests my ability to memorize shit and forget it the next day.” Right as they may be, if you can pass Level 1, you’re probably sufficiently trained for whatever bureaucracy this country can throw at you.

    PS. I had to look up the spelling of bureaucracy.

    Metropolis Media, and Welcome Boku1:

    I lived in Korea for 5 years, and as part time ESL Teacher to Korean Adults/Teens, I experienced how eger the Korean people wanted to learn English as second language and have no problem to sacrifice little of their “Mother Tougne” to go along with learning English.

    When I moved here, I thought Japanese People might have better understanding of English because their Economy is so Strong, English Communication might not really be a big problem among people, at least for foreigners… to my surprise, People always say to me that “I wish I can speak good English”, “Gome, no Enrilish”… instead when they try to talk to you, they were like “Nihongo Shaberu”(Don’t you speaking Japanese?)….I can understand people taking TOEFL, TOEIC or any other English Proficiency Test, to deal International Community, but seems Japanese People want everyone to take their Test to deal with them, not humble themselves lower-down their Mother Language to really learn other languages, in a general Population Scale.

    Due to misunderstanding and fear of humiliation, it appears Japanese isolate themselves from English speaking, instead, developed these Cultural Differences as fence when dealt with Foreigners… I just wrote another comments on Craig, “The Daddy’s Boy”, that how Japanese Law treat their own kind so gentle while punish those who doesn’t fully understand the Japan Culture!

    I know about SLA, I often encourage my friends, Japanese Friends to speak their own mind, and do not worry to make mistakes, that’s how we, as “natual” English-speaking people did when we were little, “make mistakes”, and learn from it.

    Maybe this is a Pandora’s Box Question: Why do Japanese People so solicitous?

    Well, to me, Japanese is neither a Hobby nor a Struggle, if I can make the message cross through, Good, if not… oh well, Moving on. I do, however, take issues when Japanese use “Cultural Differences” as excuses to deal with others!

    Jeffrey (March 06) laments the tunnel-vision of his teacher: ” I had a teacher in my first quarter count an answer wrong because I had translated mainichi as everyday instead of daily. I knew I was in trouble after that. ” While of course most people would agree with you, because ‘everyday’ and ‘daily’ appear to be synonyms — and they can often be if they are functioning as adjectives (e.g. an everyday activity/ a daily activity) — ‘daily’ can also be an adverb (e.g. an activity which is carried out daily), but ‘everyday’ cannot (* an activity which is carried out everday); this latter has to be ‘…which is carried out every day’ — that is, the two words are separate. ‘Mainichi’ is normally only an adverb; for it to function as an adjective we have to add the particle ‘no’: ‘mainichi no shinbun’ – (a/the/some/any, etc., daily newspaper(s). It’s _possible_ your teacher was thinking along these lines… possible…
