After a five-year study, the Council for Cultural Affairs has significantly revamped the list of joyo kanji, the Chinese characters that are considered the basic components of Japanese literacy. The panel added 196 kanji to the list, bringing the total to 2,136. Alas, these five characters got the boot, primarily due to lack of use.
