Director Atsushi Ogata’s debut feature, Wakiyaku Monogatari (English title: Cast Me If You Can), attracted a good deal of attention at the 13th California Independent Film Festival this month. The film, which tells the story of a supporting actor who lands the lead in a Japanese remake of a Woody Allen comedy, was nominated for best film and best director, as well as a best actor nod to Toru Masuoka. Hiromi Nagasaku, who plays Masuoka’s love interest, took home the award for best actress, which has previously been won by such heavyweights as Mira Sorvino, Minnie Driver and Virginia Madsen. The film will be released on an English-subtitled DVD on February 25.
