Takeshi Kitano’s latest movie, Outrage, has been selected for the competition portion at this year’s Cannes International Film Festival. Kitano, who enjoys huge popularity in Europe, was recently presented with France’s top honor for the arts. Outrage will be the second of his movies to be entered at Cannes, following Kikujiro no Natsu in 1999. The filmmaker told reporters he can’t wait to return to the festival for Outrage, a yakuza film that features lots of betrayal, mind games and gore. “It’s my first violent movie in a while, and I’m looking forward to the audience reaction,” he said. Kitano appears in the film alongside Kippei Shiina (Rain Fall) and Ryo Kase (Letters From Iwo Jima). The festival runs May 12-23, and Outrage opens in Japan on June 12.
