Strolling into the ballroom of the Grand Hyatt hotel in traditional kimono and an eye patch, actor Takashi Sorimachi looks like an Edo-era pirate. In reality, he is Jubei Yagyu, the legendary one-eyed swordsman in the new period drama, Yagyu Bugeicho. The show is the latest installment of TV Tokyo’s Shinshun Wide Jidaigeki, which is broadcast annually on January 2 and has become one of Japan’s most popular New Year traditions. Yagyu Bugeicho features an all-star cast that also includes Mokomichi Hayami (Rough), Hideki Takahashi (Kunitori Monogatari) and Rei Kikukawa (former Bankisha presenter). The action starts when a secret scroll containing valuable information is stolen from the Yagyu clan, and Jubei and his brother Matajuro (Hayami) set off to chase down the culprits and prevent the info from falling into the wrong hands. At a recent press conference, jidaigeki first-timer Hayami was especially excited to see the final product. “Probably the hardest thing was learning how to put on the kimono,” he said with a laugh. “Fortunately, I had lots of pros around to help.” Kikukawa was also enthusiastic about the experience, which she said gave her the opportunity to play a “totally female role.” But the actress remained coy when asked what her favorite scene was. “There was one incredibly fun moment… but I can’t say what yet.” Veteran actor Takahashi, who plays the head of the Yagyu clan, says he hopes that shows like this will cause more young people to become fans of jidaigeki.
Airs Jan 2 at 4pm on TV Tokyo, channel 12.
