An intelligent if not constantly riveting examination of how the emotional turmoil of John Lennon’s formative years led to the almost mystical mix of joy and sadness we find in many of his lyrics. It’s not about The Beatles. The cocky but impressionable John (Aaron Johnson) was raised by his unsmiling Aunt Mimi (a spot-on Kristin Scott Thomas) after his flighty but far more soulful mom, Julia (Anne-Marie Duff), proved not up to the task. John and Julia are reunited in his adolescence and bond with a volatile mixture of maternal love and sexual desire. Listen to the song he wrote for her.
