Sofia Coppola’s social commentary, sort of, on today’s obsessive celebrity culture is based on a real-life quartet of vapid, entitled L.A. high-school girls and a gay boy who would determine through social media when Paris, Lindsay, Miranda or Orlando would be away from home, break in and steal pretty things. While it’s nicely filmed and well acted, it soon grows repetitive. Its glaring drawback is having to spend an hour and a half in the presence of these useless, self-absorbed brats. It’s depressing. Interesting for a bit, but ultimately a narratively static satire as forgettable as its victims. (87 min)
