Two Mothers

Joylessly banal subject matter

A couple of hard-body Aussie women of a certain age (Naomi Watts and Robin Wright) begin diddling each other’s hunky 19-year-old sons. An alternate title to this ludicrous melodrama is Adore. I suggest Honey I Screwed the Kids. It would be the height of hypocrisy for me to criticize inter-generational lust. Nor would I dream of denying middle-aged women their soft-core wish-fulfillment porn. It was not the subject matter that I found offensive; it was the sheer, joyless banality of the thing, leavened only by the unintentional hilarity of the colossally self-serious dialogue. Japanese title: Utsukushii E no Hokai. (110 min)
