Unfinished Song

Tries a bit too hard

A morose old guy (Terence Stamp) resists his wife’s (Vanessa Redgrave) pleas to join her old-folks’ choir. The group, cast from real community choir members and led by a spunky Gemma Arterton, lives for the joy in each moment and in each tune. They do stuff like “Let’s Talk About Sex” and ”Love Shack.” Quaint. But he reconsiders after her death, faces up to his own shortcomings and starts to live his life. It’s hard to criticize one of the few movies aimed at the elderly, but though the acting is tops and a few songs are quite moving, it tries a bit too hard. Thin plot peters out, but a stirring finish.
