After three weeks, 100-plus hours, and several missed holiday parties, I can safely say I am ready to review Final Fantasy XIII. The verdict? About four parts good and one part bad. On the positive side, expect the best graphics, music, animation and overall production values you’ve ever seen in a videogame. FFXIII never fails to take your breath away with its visuals, and thanks to a strong story and cast, you’ll be motivated to soldier on to the end. It also has a totally bitchin’ battle system, with the most challenging and epic combat the series has yet to offer. The downside? Precious little replay value. With scant opportunity for exploration (particularly in the first half of the game), few side-quests, and an extraordinarily linear plot progression, FFXIII is an amazing one-time experience. Once it’s done, though, it’s done—until you get nostalgic, or bored with Wii Resort.
