Congratulations! If you’re reading this, it means that Final Fantasy XIII was released yesterday and the world didn’t end. I’ll also assume that the inevitable street riots have been quelled and the mass suicides subsided. It has indeed been a long wait, and as to whether or not the game lives up to its hype, I shall respectfully reserve judgment until after the new year. For better or worse, Thursday’s release is only the first of three in a planned FFXIII trilogy. Last April’s demo should have allayed any suspicions that the graphics and overall presentation might be anything less than stunning. Cheers to you, Square Enix. Overrated as I may think your flagship series is, FFXIII’s debut is a momentous occasion for the RPG genre—and for millions of gamers around the world.
