No handheld console in history has come close to the Nintendo DS in terms of market success. Since its 2004 release, the device has had three makeovers—the DS Lite, the DSi and, last fall, the DSi XL. The fact that practically every Japanese citizen owns one of these likely inspired Nintendo to remake the console a fourth time in the form of the recently announced
3DS. This time, however, you won’t have to work so hard to justify shelling out thousands of yen on an upgrade. The 3DS features—you guessed it—3D graphics, a larger screen, a gyroscope, two built-in cameras, significantly improved hardware (supposedly more powerful than the PSP), an analog stick, and a wealth of sweet ports and remakes due near launch. We’re talkin’ new versions of Star Fox 64, Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Super Street Fighter IV. Sweeter still? The 3DS is backwards compatible, meaning you can use your old DS as a hasty birthday gift for one of your low-tier friends.
