Starting as a local Kanto-area program and then moving on to the big leagues, Guru-Guru Ninety-Nine (popularly known as “Gurunai”) has enjoyed extreme popularity since its debut in 1994. The show, hosted by Takashi Okamura and Hiroyuki Yabe of comedy duo Ninety-Nine, features the popular segment “Gochi ni narimasu!” (literally, “It’s your treat!”). Each week, contestants visit a gourmet restaurant and order dishes they think will total up to a pre-set amount, without knowing the prices. Whichever guest’s total is furthest from the amount must then pay for everyone’s meal—in cash. If the loser’s wallet is empty, he or she is forced to borrow from another contestant. In an extra twist, the loser who has spent the most money at the end of the year is kicked off the show permanently. Current competitors include actress Esumi Makiko, model Izumi Mori and actor Taichi Kokubun.
Airs Thursdays at 8pm on NTV, channel 4.
