Each Friday on Sekai wo Koeru Hyakunin no Nihonjin (roughly, “100 Japanese Who Span the Globe”), TV Tokyo devotes an hour of airtime to telling the stories of Japanese people who have made a name—and, in some cases, fame and fortune—for themselves overseas. This week’s program features enterprising folks like Yusei Uesugi, a scenery artist who has created backgrounds for Hollywood blockbusters like Star Wars and Avatar, and Ken LaCosse, master craftsman of traditional wooden shakuhachi flutes. Stay tuned to hear the inspirational story of the Asahi Tigers, a Vancouver baseball team for Japanese-Canadians that enjoyed great success in the ’30s before being disbanded due to the World War II internment of resident Japanese.
Airs Friday at 8pm on TV Tokyo, channel 12.
