Kyao of Sugar 'N' Spice

This rising, young, Japanese female rock star goes by the name of “Kyao” and wants to be the opening act for the Rolling Stones. She also told us that she created a song about and for super model Kate Moss in English. What will the new format be? Who will be the new DJ’s? What language? What kind of music? All these questions and more are answered by broadcast veteran and the newly appointed Executive Director of Tokyo’s InterFM Peter Barakan.

Bilingual broadcaster Barakan has been introducing Japanese listeners to Western rock for the past 25 years via programs like InterFM’s Barakan Beat - but sees declining interest among the young. How does he plan to fight the trend now that he’s the new director? Metropolis had a chance to catch up with Barakan at the InterFM offices to hear about his strategy for Tokyo’s only “international” radio station.

Dr. Laurence Kominz

Professor Laurence Kominz received his Ph.D. in Japanese literature from Columbia University and is currently living in Japan and teaching at Tokyo’s prestigious Waseda University. He told us that his specialty is Japanese drama, and that he has also taken performance lessons in noh, kyogen, kabuki, and gidayu bushi (recitation for Bunraku puppet theatre). Recently, Dr. Kominz joined us for hot pastrami sandwiches at Suji’s and among many, many other interesting things told us that kabuki was like the “reality show” of it’s day. Listen and be amazed!
