Ginza isn’t short on drinking spots, but when it comes to quality beer, Bulldog stands alone. The lineup of draft brews includes Guinness, Kilkenny, Hoegaarden, Bass Pale Ale and Asahi Super Dry. But what sets the bar apart is the rotation of domestic and international craft beers. With an emphasis on rare and interesting brands, Bulldog buys its microbrews by the barrel, so when one keg runs dry, another is ready to take its place. The bottled beer range is no afterthought, either—30 varieties from around the world are on offer, including such quality, hard-to-find labels as Greenfresh and Stone Brewing Co. from San Diego. All are imported in small batches to keep the bottles tasting as fresh as possible. Bulldog’s food menu is an eclectic mix of inventive dishes, like shrimp simmered in sherry-garlic sauce (¥740) and pork tagliata with mascarpone cheese and cassis-balsamic sauce (¥920), as well as barroom favorites like fish & chips (¥650). In the midst of Ginza’s swank boutiques, Bulldog offers a haven for beer lovers and anyone in search of some good honest grub.

With locations in Marunouchi and Shiodome, gastro-pub Coopers is without a doubt one of Tokyo’s slickest destinations for after-work drinks. The Marunouchi branch’s lush armchairs, dark wood furniture and classic floor lamps provide an upscale mood fit for Tokyo’s titans of industry—without getting too formal. The Shiodome pub keeps things lighter with airy vaulted ceilings, enormous windows and breezy neutral tones for a stylish yet homey café-like atmosphere. You’ll find the regulars on tap—Guinness, Sapporo and Kilkenny—but Coopers pulls ahead of the crowd with the Mega Pint: 2.5 pints of your chosen brew in a giant two-hander beer glass (from ¥1,800). Coopers also serves upscale versions of classic pub fare, like roast beef with gravy (¥1,150) and massive brochettes with one skewer each of succulent tandoori chicken, Iberico ham, and grilled shrimp and squid (¥2,980). Rumor has it that regulars at Coopers can get their drinks on the cheap; inquire for details.

Satsumaya

The summers get awfully sultry in Kagoshima, but the prefecture’s residents know how to beat the heat: with frosty cold drinks to accompany steamy soups and simple-yet-elegant comfort food. Satsumaya brings that southern style to Tokyo, serving up fine Japanese cuisine made with the finest southern Kyushu ingredients alongside cool glasses of local shochu—and, of course, beer. Sip a frothy glass of Kirin Ichiban Shibori or Heartland (from ¥650/glass) while munching on black pork and vegetable hot pot or a sashimi spread, made with fish sent straight from Kagoshima every morning. Satsumaya’s original “oil shabu shabu” (¥2,200), with thin strips of black pork cooked gently in flavored oil, is not to be missed, and you can’t go wrong with the generous set lunches (starting from ¥950). The four locations each have a different atmosphere, but all provide a comfortable and relaxed space that’s perfect for enjoying home-cooked flavors and a cold brew.

Junkadelic’s two groovy hangouts are run by a former punk rocker and surfer who, after traveling around Mexico, longed for an authentic restaurant in Tokyo with fantastic food and a lively atmosphere. If you’re looking for something a bit more international, T.G.I.F offers nine kinds of bottled beer, including Lowenbrau (¥750) and Grolsch (¥980), plus three on tap. Regular customers can mix things up at the new Friday’s Red, an “American Bistro and Bar” that combines the familiar Friday’s style with the spirit of a Japanese izakaya. This Shibuya hideaway offers up all your favorites in sharable portions, plus bottled beers starting at ¥680 and munchies at ¥290. Friday’s Red makes the perfect stop for some tasty American goodness and cheap brews, and it’s also the perfect spot to watch some live sports action.

Shimokitazawa

Beer Rock

Tucked away on a side street just a few minutes’ walk from Shimokitazawa station, Beer Rock promises good times, fantastic music and some esoteric brews. The bar was opened by a pair of former high-school buddies last September, and has already earned itself a strong following. With seven kinds of draft beer and roughly 50 bottled varieties from around the globe, including some little-known Japanese classics, you’d have to come here a lot of times before you’d tried everything. Bar Rock always has at least three types of Hitachino Nest Beer on tap (¥950/pint, ¥750/half pint), including Weizen, white ale, amber ale or sweet stout. Alternatively, try a hand-pumped glass of Yona Yona Real Ale from Karuizawa (¥950/pint, ¥650/half pint), or one of two varieties of Rogue beer, from Oregon in the US (¥950/pint, ¥700/half pint). The food menu includes filling fare like tacos, pizzas and pastas alongside the usual bar snacks. And in case you hadn’t guessed from the name (and the LP jackets lining the wall), Beer Rock is paradise for music lovers. There are live acoustic sessions every Saturday, and music requests are taken the rest of the time—the more rockin’, the better.

Waterfront

Kirin Water Grill

Japan’s venerable brewing giant Kirin has picked a plum location for its Water Grill. Perched on the waterfront of the manmade island of Odaiba, the views across Tokyo Bay are breathtaking, justifying the area’s reputation as a dating paradise. The specialty of the house is, of course, beer, with five types of Kirin on tap: Brau Meister, Heartland, Ichiban Shibori, Ichiban Shibori Black, and half and half. There’s also bottled beer, wine, whisky and cocktails to choose from. The bar-restaurant’s large open deck can seat over 100 people, and offers magnificent views of Rainbow Bridge and the Tokyo skyline. Water Grill has just added an extra bar featuring draft Heineken Extra Cold (¥500), which they say is served below freezing. You can quaff your cold one in the bar or take it out to the restaurant for a brew with a view. The kitchen serves up US-style dishes such as barbecued ribs (full ¥3,600; half ¥1,980), and has a reputation for fine seafood. Fans of hearty fare will also want to try the assorted sausage plate (¥1,200), which includes a 45cm-long garlic sausage, German Weisswurst and minced arabiki sausage. And just to show how welcome foreign customers are, Kirin Water Grill will offer a 5 percent discount on the bill if you show your passport.

T.Y. Harbor

It has a stunning waterside location, a choice of airy indoor seating or picturesque terrace chairs, and an oft-praised menu from chef David Chiddo that will impress any foodie. But T.Y. Harbor in Shinagawa is still all about the malt and hops. Brewmaster Kazunaga Abe oversees what Metropolis beer writer Bryan Harrell has hailed as “Tokyo’s best microbrewery.” Abe’s Wheat Ale is made in a traditional Belgian style using malted wheat and barley malt for a lighter, brisker flavor—a fine summer refresher for the terrace. The Amber Ale has a deep color and a rich, solid body from its roasted malts; its complex flavor has hints of caramel, coffee and chocolate. T.Y.’s flagship beer is its Pale Ale, slightly fruity with the brisk, citrus-like flavor of Cascade hops, a now much-in-demand US brand. A deep, roasty Porter and a rich organic ale round off the regular menu, but Abe adds seasonal specials to keep tickling our taste buds anew. The best way to try this master’s work is a ¥950 tasting set of Amber, Pale, Wheat and a brewer’s choice ale. A waterside microbrew with acclaimed food and beer... what’s keeping you? And don’t miss the Summertime BBQ Bash 2009 at T.Y. Harbor and sister branch Waterline on July 5, from 2-8pm. The ticket price (men ¥4,500, ladies ¥3,500, kids ¥1,500) includes all you can eat from a buffet of burgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken, shrimp, sausages, BBQ ribs, David’s Kick-Ass Chili and salads, plus three drink tickets (extra drink tickets ¥500 each).
