Located in a quiet residential district not far from the crowds of central Tokyo, Akamonkai has several unique features for the discerning Japanese language student. After students graduate from Akamonkai, many go to college, university or graduate school. But as more students have recently been seeking to enter Japanese companies, Human Power, Akamonkai’s group company, now assists them with their job hunt.

Azabudai Japanese
Language School
● Azabudai Japanese Language School offers practical lessons based on real-life situations to help students acquire communicative knowledge, rather than just grammatical structures. Beginner students at Azabudai are given a three-month starter course that introduces hiragana, katakana and simple sentences.
Instructors at Azabudai Japanese Language School all have over six years of experience, and the students come from various backgrounds and nationalities. Lessons are conducted in large classrooms in a relaxed atmosphere, and because Azabudai is considered an NPO, fees are extremely reasonable.

Intercultural Institute of Japan
● The Intercultural Institute of Japan is in its third decade, making it one of the longest-established language schools in the country. Nearly 400 students from over 50 nations attend classes at the institute’s campus in Akihabara. The school adheres to a philosophy of cross-cultural communications (CCC), which posits that people should live together by understanding and respecting each other’s language and culture. IIJ places tremendous importance on mutual trust between the students and the school. There are two types of course on offer. The weekly short-term course takes a goal-oriented approach to learning: rather than progressing from the easiest expressions to the more difficult, the focus is on the language that’s most important to communication. The long-term course, on the other hand, is for students who plan to spend 1-2 years studying and provides a balance of reading, listening, writing and speaking skills, with lessons structured to emphasize both the practical and theoretical aspects of Japanese.
Students can also take private lessons or courses tailored to business needs, and JLPT preparatory courses may be available when sufficient numbers are enrolled.

Japanese Language
Education Journal
● Located in the heart of Shinjuku, Japanese Language Education Journal (JLEJ) provides an enjoyable, speedy and effective learning experience. The school’s curriculum takes you inside the minds of Japanese people, helping you think, write and speak the language the way the locals do. After completing the courses, you won’t need to translate your thoughts from your native tongue before expressing them; rather, you’ll be confident and able to express yourself naturally when conversing in Japanese. Students are also given the tools to study effectively by themselves and master all aspects of the Japanese language. However, the biggest advantage to taking classes with JLEJ is that you can become truly proficient in Japanese in a relatively short period of time—as little as 60 hours.
JLEJ currently offers strategy classes for JLPT 1, 2 and 3, focusing on test practice and lectures to help students pass the exams. Lessons are available Sundays from 12-6pm and Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 7-9pm. To further enhance the learning experience, JLEJ invites all students to enjoy Japanese through upcoming traditional events like their Hanami Party (March) and Tanabata Party (July).
Meanwhile, if you are a native Japanese speaker, why not learn how to teach your own language? JLEJ Japanese Language Center fosters professional Japanese teachers, drawing on their 34 years of experience and practical knowhow. After graduating from the school, you’ll be able to teach Japanese to anyone, anytime. Internships and on-the-job training both inside and outside Japan are also available. If you’re interested, you can observe the course on weekends for ¥2,000.
As a special offer to Metropolis readers, JLEJ will waive the registration fee for all applicants who mention they saw the school’s ad in the current issue of the magazine.

Kumon
● The Kumon Japanese Language Program was designed to help students become proficient in their communication skills through the use of worksheets that develop vocabulary, kanji, grammar, reading and writing ability. Listening and speaking skills are honed through the use of CDs. Students start at a level suited to their current ability, then proceed at their own pace. Since the learning materials are composed of small units, students can steadily build the foundation of their Japanese ability and advance step-by-step. In three months beginners will learn to read and write hiragana and katakana; within six months, they will have become familiar with over 100 kanji and mastered many expressions useful for everyday life.
The program can be started any time at any of the 900 Kumon-method Japanese schools nationwide. If you are too busy to go to a school, take the correspondence course. As the basis of the program is home study, it enables you to study anytime, anywhere.

Shinjuku Japanese Language Institute
● Shinjuku Japanese Language Institute (a.k.a Shinjuku Nihongo Gakko, or SNG) uses the Ezoe Method, a unique teaching system that makes grammar easier to learn by employing color codes to engage students’ visual memorization. (This code comes in handy because the institute has students from 45 different countries, and they have many different native languages!) Another cutting-edge feature of the Ezoe Method is the Sound Reader, a state-of-the-art, mouse-like machine that can “read” aloud a code that’s printed on normal paper. This high-tech equipment, used only at SNG, saves teachers from having to carry around heavy CD players or unwieldy cassettes. The institute has also created an image-based software system that helps students learn kanji in a playful and constructive way.
But the innovation doesn't end here. SNG strives to make students comfortable in their daily lives, not just to teach them how to pass an exam. And since the school aims for long-term proficiency for its students, Japanese is the only language spoken during classes. Additionally, SNG aims to help students integrate into Japanese life, presenting students with the opportunity to experience a variety of cultural and recreational activities, from cooking courses to ski trips, shrine tours to sumo tournaments.
SNG offers a wide range of courses, from beginner to advanced levels, with business classes and even Japanese teacher training lessons. Each of these eight levels can be completed in three months. Classes take place on weekdays, evenings and even on Sundays.

We Japanese Language School
● We Japanese Language School believes that combining classroom activity with real-life language experience helps improve overall learning ability. That’s why it offers not only fundamental courses for grammar practice, but a variety of private lessons featuring the “Conversation Session”— a free-talk period with the instructor that emphasizes the grammar and vocabulary learned in class.
Unlike other language schools, We offers lessons in calligraphy, glass art and video to help build students’ Japanese ability and cultural skills. In addition, a lounge shared with a sister English school allows students to mingle and practice their speaking skills. Another innovation is the in-house language exchange program called the “Student Partner System,” where each student has a call partner to help them solve any study problem.
Group classes are taught by We’s qualified professional instructors, who use time-proven teaching methods and original materials, ensuring that students learn effectively. Private lessons include customized programs designed to suit each student’s unique style and objectives.
Conveniently located three minutes from Shibuya station, We boasts sophisticated facilities, a relaxed learning environment and flexible lesson times, seven days a week. Off-site services are available for those who need to make the most of their busy schedules.

Tokyo's international schools put
your child on the path to success
Koala Kids International Preschool
● One of the first things you’ll notice about this brand new international preschool is the size of the classroom. At over 300m2, it’s the biggest in the Chiba area.
Needless to say, with so much space, there’s plenty of room for toys that your child can enjoy and learn with, including soft blocks, jumping ball pools, and specialized toys that target the development of physical coordination and cognitive skills. Koala is also dedicated to providing your child with a safe environment, with padded corners, door-jam covers, child locks on every door, and child-height handrails.
Koala Kids offers six basic care and education plans that are flexible and reasonably priced. There is also an English-immersion course for children aged 1-6 that includes a program of games, songs, art and free play, plus more formalized lessons for the older children. All staff communicate in English and encourage the children to respond in kind, providing a comfortable environment for them to develop their language skills.
Koala Kids’ philosophy is simple: children absorb knowledge quickly if they are constantly exposed to new stimuli, especially if they are having fun. Monthly parties and extracurricular events offer more chances to learn about both Japan and the rest of the world through art, music and culture.

The school aims to create a warm, caring environment that reflects our philosophy and also provides an infinite number of opportunities for children to develop a “love of learning.” The program is designed to build on the strengths of each child, valuing families and their ethnicity as well as everyone’s contribution to the school. The owners combine 40 years of experience in teaching, in particular early childhood education, stretching from South Africa to Australia to England to Taiwan and now to Tokyo.
Ohana International School’s philosophy and methodology draws on the best of many teaching practices and concepts. Thanks to their knowledge and unique approach, the highly skilled staff guide children safely and respectfully into making theories, expressing their own thoughts and embracing difference. Students benefit from individualized care in a stimulating, secure environment so that every child can develop his/her maximum potential.
The preschool provides an extremely intimate and nurturing environment. Classes are grouped according to age, each class with its own individually designed curriculum. The emphasis for the younger children is on social and emotional development while fostering independence. It provides children with the skills necessary for learning at higher levels through total English immersion in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere.
Summerhill’s Art Program explores theories that inspire and transform a child’s life through the power of artistic expression while planting the seeds that build self-esteem and confidence, improve social skills, develop trust and help kids express emotions in a positive way.
In the Japanese Immersion Program, students learn Japanese with native speakers through both regular conversation, as well as using the subject matter they are currently studying. From MBA's to film degrees, the learning never stops in Tokyo
Columbia University,
Teachers College
● The Japan Campus of Teachers College, Columbia University was officially designated by the Monbukagaku-sho as a foreign graduate school in 2006. The university currently offers an MA in TESOL program, providing opportunities to study the theory and practice of teaching EFL in Japan. All courses are held on weekends, so working teachers can take full advantage of the program. Applications are accepted online throughout the year, which means that students can start in the fall, spring or summer semesters.
Taught by an international faculty, the program is designed to help teachers integrate theory and practice in ways that best serve their students and their institutional contexts. Instructors introduce teachers to the latest developments in English language teaching and encourage them to interact with their peers to consider how these ideas can support positive changes in their practices. Participants will then be able to relate current practices and theories in TESOL to their day-to-day teaching.

Graduate School of Management, Globis University
● Located in the heart of Tokyo, Globis University started life in 1992 with just a single marketing course. Since then, it has gone on to become the largest management educational institution in Japan. Now, with the launch of an International MBA program (IMBA) in April 2009, it is well on its way to achieving its goal of being the No.1 business school in the whole of Asia.
The IMBA is a two-year, part-time program, with the flexibility to extend to five years. Classes are offered on weekday evenings and weekends, and taught entirely in English.
Globis University stands apart from other business schools in a variety of ways. For starters, its faculty and staff all share the same “venture spirit.” By cutting to the heart of business issues, students can immediately apply what they’ve learned to their jobs. Practicality is infused in the curriculum, and faculty members bring their extensive real-world experience to their teaching, ensuring that the learning experience extends beyond theories.
Enrolling in the IMBA also allows students to enjoy access to the Globis MBA programs (one of the largest in Japan), as well as its venture capital fund and corporate training division—forming a unique combination of people, capital and knowledge.
Globis’ popular Pre-IMBA program lets students try only courses that interest them before deciding to invest in an MBA. The program not only offers flexibility, but numerous networking opportunities with a diverse group.

Japan Market Expansion Competition (JMEC)
● If you are looking for opportunities to improve your business skills, find a new job, get promoted at your current job, or just expand your network of professional contacts, JMEC is for you. Since 1993, over 700 professionals in Japan have gained hands-on business training by enrolling in JMEC’s mini-MBA program.
The Japan Market Expansion Competition (JMEC) is a training program that is centered around a competition to write the best business plan. The program begins each fall, with a series of Saturday lectures covering basic business topics, business-plan writing and the ins and outs of doing business in Japan. In January, participants are placed in teams of roughly six people and paired with a company seeking to enter or expand into the Japanese market. The teams spend the next four months preparing a business plan for their client and for a panel of JMEC judges, who award first, second and third place winners. Members of the winning teams receive exciting prizes like laptop computers and airline tickets.
JMEC 17 begins in fall 2010. Learn more at www.jmec.gr.jp.

A three-year program features courses structured for high school graduates, but middle school graduates can enroll as well. Pottery Tokyo
● Instead of spending your winter tweeting and texting, why not do something really creative with your hands? Enroll in Eriko Kuroda’s Japanese pottery class—and discover the deeper meaning of “the Japanese heart.”
Kuroda began her career as a professional ceramicist about 12 years ago while living in Argentina, and has practiced her craft in Miami, San Diego and London. After returning to Tokyo five years ago, she began her own pottery school specifically with foreigners in mind. But her lessons aren’t just about molding clay; they’re also about Japanese history, culture and tradition. Kuroda believes that by learning the art of making pottery, students can also learn about Japan from an angle they may never have otherwise known.
For two days each week, Kuroda opens Pottery Tokyo in Oimachi, where up to seven students can enjoy a cozy atmosphere. She also conducts a larger workshop in Daikanyama. A recent session with Metropolis staffers confirms that the lessons are informative, easy and fun, with a lot of laughs along the way. It’s like visiting an old friend’s home.
The ideal way to learn about the workshop is to sign up for a trial lesson, which presently is available for only ¥5,000 (¥3,900 with the ad until the end of March). See the website for more information.
