ESSE DUE
Established 14 years ago, this premium pizza parlor originally drew attention from press and public as one of the first to use firewood to bake its offerings. Wood-fired ovens might well be ubiquitous nowadays in Tokyo eateries, but Esse Due is still the original place where you can be sure it’s done right.
Rather than rely on a single well-traveled chef, Esse Due insists that all of its staff have experience working in Italy. Not only that, but the pizza oven that is their pride and joy was designed by Italian craftsmen who came over to Tokyo especially for the illustrious task. The restaurant, split into a first-floor pizzeria and a basement trattoria, aims to recreate the look and feel of an Italian eatery—and it pulls it off. The homey atmosphere will be just the place to indulge in some Christmas comfort-eating Italian style, with authentic Napolitan pizzas on the menu—and even a limited-edition Christmas pizza in the offing from the brilliant culinary minds of the chefs.
With the US Embassy lodgings nearby, Esse Due often has foreign clientele, but is equally loved by the Japanese professionals who throng the lively zone of Akasaka. If you never sank your teeth into their crispy, wood-oven-baked discs of goodness, a chilly winter’s evening might be the time to taste a fixture in the Tokyo pizza panorama.

MAHALIC MAHALITA
Take Mexican food in Japan to a new level of art in the kaleidoscopic world of Mahalic Mahalita in Kita-Aoyama. The interior of th e restaurant was designed by Japanese artist Yukako Fukuda, using colorful ornaments she selected from all over Japan, along with a passionately rendered painting of a dahlia—a flower native to Mexico—on the wall.
Allow these dancing colors to infect your mood over the festive season, and enjoy the playful and vibrant holidays at Mahalic Mahalita, lubricated by premium tequila and fuelled by delicious dishes.
The Christmas set menu costs ¥4,500 and includes a glass of sparkling wine accompanied by guacamole-salsa chips, followed by tacos. Then indulge in a little seafood marinated in lime juice and chili—ceviche—and follow that up with the day’s Mexican grill, pasta or chili-beans rice, and a dessert to round the banquet off. Their use of high quality ingredients and traditional cooking methods ensure that the true taste of the food is preserved for all to enjoy.
The chef at Mahalic Mahalita trained in many Japanese restaurants and worked at a top oyster bar, but he always harbored a dream of running a Mexican restaurant utilizing in-season seafood. Summing up this philosophy is their signature dish of jumbo shrimp in tequila sauce—what could get better than that?
Check their site for news of tequila parties and other fun events.

HOBGOBLIN SHIBUYA & AKASAKA
The Hobgoblin has become a home from home for much of the expat community in Tokyo with its food, drink, and welcoming atmosphere. And the traditional British values expressed there have garnered numerous followers among Japanese clientele, too.
Bearing all this in mind, where could you find a better place to be when Christmas comes around? The three Hobgoblin branches are placed in the key areas of Tokyo, and this holiday season those in Shibuya and Akasaka will be offering a slightly different option from their larger sister pub in the heart of Roppongi.
At these two branches, the friendly, British-owned pub chain will be serving up a delicious roast turkey plate with stuffing, bacon-wrapped chipolatas, roast potatoes, vegetables, (including Brussels sprouts), and cranberry sauce. Tuck into all of this for the reasonable price of ¥2,200. Alternatively, nab a three-course set, with a glass of champagne or wine, for just ¥5,000.
This bountiful banquet will be served from noon until 10:30pm on Christmas Day so treat it as your lunch, dinner, afternoon snack or brunch, as you please.
Also available during December is Hobgoblin’s great-value Christmas Party Menu, with two hours all-you-can-drink with food for only ¥3,500. Check the site for more details.

FAILTE
Its name meaning “welcome” in Irish, the concept of Failte is to provide a warm and embracing space for all and sundry, in its woody, Old Country pub-style atmosphere. In the spirit of Christmas giving, the staff at Failte are currently working out the details on a special holiday-season deal. From December 22-25, you’ll be able to take advantage of a limited menu involving a beer you’d never normally find on tap, along with a special main dish and dessert.
The owner of Failte opened up his first Irish pub back in 2007, to provide denizens of Tokyo with a source of genuine Celtic grub and grog. Recommended among the nourishing dishes on the menu are the fish and chips (select from different fish on offer), beef braised in Guinness, and cottage pie.
When it comes to the liquids, the Irish staple of Guinness is on tap of course, along with London Pride, and Belgian Vedett for those white-beer moments. Irish coffee and hot whisky are fine choices to warm the cockles in the chilly season.
For the flexibly scheduled punter, Failte boasts a choice happy hour until 7pm Monday to Friday, where you can get yourself a large beer, glass of wine or cocktail for the frankly laughable cost of ¥500.
☛ 5F Shibuya SEDE, 1-5-2 Dogenzaka, Shibuya-ku. Tel: 03-3476-7776. Email: Failte@eurobeer.net. Open Mon-Sat 5:30pm-2am, Sun & hols 3-11pm Nearest stn: Shibuya. http://failte.jp
EL LABERINTO
Lose yourself in a burning cauldron of louche Latin love just two minutes’ walk from the cultural nexus of Roppongi station. If you thought that all things Hispanic extended to tacos and Ricky Martin, then El Laberinto will lead you to the center of a new maze of sensations.
For those who have never tried the cuisine of Peru, it’s quite distinct from that of its neighboring nations. The flagship dish is ceviche, a recipe of chopped raw fish and/or seafood marinated in a tasty, moreish mix of lime, coriander and chili. Lomo saltado is another typical Peruvian dish on offer at El Laberinto, made up of pieces of beef fried up in all the region’s favorite spices.
Drinkwise you can of course tuck into usual suspects like mojitos and piña coladas, as well as imported beers and the famous El Laberinto cocktail guaranteed to bring out your inner Inca.
Every day of the week except Friday and Saturday, take advantage of a happy hour that is a true revelation in Roppongi. Wander through El Laberinto’s winding passages from 8-10pm, when you can buy any beer or cocktail for the barmy price of just ¥500, and order up some finger foods for the same amount. That’s bound to get the fires crackling good during this holiday period.
☛ 3F Fusion Bldg, 7-13-8 Roppongi, Minato-ku. Tel: 03-6434-9091. Open Sun-Thu 6pm-midnight, Fri & Sat 6pm-6am. www.laberinto.jp
HOBGOBLIN ROPPONGI
It’s natural enough to feel a certain nostalgia for the home country at this time of year. Fortunately there’s an enclave in the heart of Roppongi to feel soothed by all the food, drink, and welcoming vibes you could hope for.
It has been said no Tokyo Christmas could possibly be complete without Hobgoblin’s popular three-course turkey buffet (¥5,000). This traditional feast also includes a complimentary glass of bubbly or wine to get proceedings going. And just like at any good family bash, going back for seconds is never a problem.
Children (half-price) are very welcome and the restaurant seating area will be nonsmoking all day to preserve those little respiratory systems. What’s a good seasonal repast without a few glasses of something wet? Hobgoblin’s full range of beers and quality wines will be available to complement your meal.
Guests can choose the most convenient time to suit their calendar, with three sittings on Dec 25 (noon-2pm, 3-5pm & 6-8pm). The only drawback is that the Hobgoblin buffet is so popular you might have trouble getting in. Make sure you avoid any disappointment by getting in touch straight away via email.
Also available during December is Hobgoblin’s fantastic value Christmas party menu—two hours all-you-can-drink with food for only ¥3,500. Check the site for more details.

IZAKAYA HANAKO
Wrap up your year with an extravagant set menu at Izakaya Hanako, where the kawaii staff await you with beaming smiles. The top recommendation is the ¥3,990 Hanako Course with seven different dishes and a two-hour all-you-can-drink deal.
Hanako’s concept is a “drink and dine venue for business people”—an izakaya with a twist. Using freshly imported, seasonal seafood from Hokkaido, Hanako’s chefs cook up genuine grilled seafood dishes from the northern isle. Meanwhile, the adorably dressed wait staff not only welcome you with smiles, but also make friendly conversation to keep everything ticking along. It’s not rare to see them break into song and do an impromptu performance to celebrate someone’s birthday.
Comfortable seats mark this spot out from your usual high-street basement eatery, making for a relaxing experience. Some branches have dug-up floor seats for small groups.
Popular dishes include zangi chicken (Hokkaido fried chicken) and the Hokkaido ramen salad. These traditional dishes from the frozen north go down a treat among Tokyo’s stuffy urbanites. The restaurant also offers a fine selection of sake, and the original liquor “matchless Hanako”—bound to get the festive spirit sloshing around the place.
Bring a copy of Metropolis magazine along to receive a ¥1,000 discount from the banquet set menus at any of their spots in Shinjuku, Shibuya, Kabukicho, Kawasaki and Yokohama—or their 16 other locations across the Kanto area.

The line-up is overseen by the acclaimed French chef Philippe Batton, whose credentials include membership to the French Legion of Honor, and victory on the TV cook-off show Iron Chef.

MEUSHI
Experience the passing of the Japanese seasons represented in the interior design of Meushi—and load your palate with highest-quality yakiniku at the same time. Meushi’s goal is to change the perception of Japanese grilled meat. Everything about the place drips luxury. From the four-seasons décor of vermillion, gold, and green to the waitresses bedecked in short kimono, everything at Meushi drips class, just like a sizzling chunk of meat drips succulent juices into the burning embers. Concealed lighting gives the place a sensual, relaxed feel, and the senses are massaged by the tasteful combination of modern Japan with the natural cycle and tea-ceremony motifs.
English menus are available, and if you are all thumbs—culinarily speaking—the charming and easygoing wait staff will happily cook at your table’s personal grill. Choose from Japanese or Western-style tables, and settle in for the ride.
Meushi is offering a seasonal special until January 31—the ¥7,000 full-course set for ¥5,000, and an all-you-can-drink special for just ¥2,000 (when accompanying the set menu). If you’re looking to have your end of year party at Meushi, make sure you reserve now, and for a New Year event, by the end of December. PERUVIAN CUISINE NAZCA
Enjoy a Peruvian-style Christmas dinner at Nazca—and engage with the deliciousness of a new culture. The centerpiece of the Christmas banquet (from ¥4,200 per person) is the famous Nazca roast chicken, known to cause grown adults to weep with contentment. The banquet also includes sparkling wine, Christmas salad, Peruvian rice, pork stew, Christmas bread, and nourishing hot chocolate to leave you contented.
Nazca’s owner, who set up shop last June, is Peruvian-born Japanese, and learnt her culinary skills in her parents’ Peruvian restaurant. To name a few of her dishes, you can try ceviche (marinated seafood with lemon juice, limo chili and coriander), papa a la huancaina (potato with a cheese and yellow-pepper sauce), lomo saltado (beef and vegetable stirfry) and many other typical dishes from the land of the Incas.
The interior design showcases the culture of the Peruvian region like a mini art museum. Just as ancient Nazca art is drawn on the surface of the soil, so too can you see drawings on the restaurant’s floor. The menu and maps are hand-drawn to give an authentic look, and the venue is decorated with cultural folk crafts.
English menus and English-speaking staff are available, and an all-you-can-drink menu is offered from ¥2,000 (with food orders over ¥2,500). Say you read it in Metropolis for a 5% discount at dinner time until Feb 2013.

BASI PILATES
To move beyond traditional exercise to a more holistic approach, Pilates can provide a way forward. It combines physical strength-building and methods—such as breathing exercises—that cater to the contents of your head, too. Stop in at one of 11 studios around Tokyo to get to know Basi Pilates and how it operates.
The discipline was invented in the early 20th century by German nurse Joseph Pilates, and is now practiced by an estimated 20 million people around the world. Pilates uses the mind to control the muscles, helping build flexibility, strength, endurance, and coordination in the legs, abdominals, arms and back. Muscles deep in your body that work to support your skeleton are toned—not just surface muscles reached by ordinary exercise. Pilates helps you access this power for the first time. Contractions can then be managed daily to improve your posture and physical well being.
During sessions, you will also be helped to direct your mind inwards, enabling relaxation. Concentration and breathing exercises help create a focused mind. Lessons will fly by quickly–but you will be left feeling totally refreshed and ready to continue with your busy week.
As a special offer for readers of Metropolis, Basi Roppongi is offering free admission (regular price ¥15,750), a trial machine private lesson for ¥8,400 (¥10,000) and a package machine private lesson for ¥18,000 (¥30,000).

DUDE
Typically when you walk into a Japanese hair salon, you are confronted by an army of staff bellowing a greeting and fawning over you like you’re a movie star or minor member of the Royal Family. You get conducted with pomp and splendor to your seat and wrapped up like a Christmas turkey. And worse, instead of them just knuckling down and getting on with the job, you are instead subjected to endless interrogation, covering what you eat and don’t eat, where you’re from and what people snack on there, comparative studies of weather in Japan and your home country, and other delightful topics.
Now, this might be great for some people, but if you just want to have your hair cut well, but quietly, and with no extra hassle, you should zero in on Dude.
Located among the trendy lanes of Shimokitazawa, among a host of independent cafés, vintage shops, and waffle houses, Dude is a salon with its priorities firmly in place. The staff there are friendly but efficient, and what they’re keen on doing is giving you what you came for—the stylish haircut that suits you best. They also believe in providing a totally relaxing atmosphere which leaves their customers in peace.

’Tis the season to be beautiful—and what better way than with the finest Brazilian products at Estetica Brasil Beauty, and a team of qualified professionals committed to beautifying their clients?
So step out to this season’s parties with a new hairstyle and color, and take advantage of Brazilian keratin treatment at the first salon to introduce the technique to Japan, way back in 2005. If you were hoping to wear that gorgeous slim, black dress but are worried about the logistics of getting into it, a variety of services could help, such as LipoLight, CaviLipo, Ultra Power Shape, LipoLaser, and CryoLipo. Finally, put on the finishing touches with a manicure and pedicure—and a makeover by the inhouse artist.
Waxwise, the quality at Estetica is second to none in terms of hygiene, professionalism, and consistency. How do they know? Because their customers keep coming back—and bringing along their friends and family. The staff performing the wax are fast and well-trained, reducing any pain during the 20-30-minute procedure. And getting to the bottom line (excuse the pun), the rates are economical at ¥6,000 for women and ¥15,000 for men.

GOLD SALON TOKYO
Newcomers and long-term residents alike know how hit-and-miss Tokyo salon experiences can be. Asian hair is quite different from other types, and many salon stylists in Japan just don’t have the required skills to work on non-Asian hair types.
This well rounded skill set is what Gold Salon staff have in abundance—and they should do since 98% of their clients are Caucasian. Tokyo’s only 100% foreign-owned and managed salon is helmed by Howard Lee Regner, a longtime Tokyo resident with over thirty years’ experience in Sydney, London, and Paris. He’s installed a salon you’d expect to find in London or NYC, right in the eclectic neighborhood of Azabu-Juban—and he imports most of the top shelf products he uses to guarantee high quality results his expat client’s demand.
Styling director Fabio, previously the go-to stylist in Miami and Rio de Janeiro, is Gold’s “King of Color,” providing clients with great-looking, natural hair color with an emphasis on skin-tone suitability and minimum chemical stress. If you have the kind of hair that never looks shiny and smooth between salon visits, why not try Gold’s new generation “Brazilian Keratin Treatment,” first introduced by Gold to Japan four years back. The latest formula now takes under two hours to complete and delivers high gloss, sleek, catwalk-finish hair that lasts up to four months. Just the thing to have you looking great for 2013!

HO’ME
Find an island of relaxation in the charming neighborhood of Jiyugaoka, at the new location of Ho’me. The salon offers various solutions for physical and spiritual wellbeing, for both women and men alike.
For the fellas, Top Jen is the watchword. This facial and body contouring solution delivers wrinkle, cellulite and circumference reduction, and skin tightening, and the price clocks in at a reasonable ¥10,000 per hour. Then, there is the “ultimate diet and relaxation machine,” known as Alex-S. This electromagnetic, infrared light system burns fat and cellulite, stimulates muscles, and drains lymph nodes—while you do precisely nothing. Just 30 minutes with this incredible invention burns off the same lard as a 15km jog—and it can work on your entire body or perform spot treatments. The cost is ¥10,000 for a one-hour session.
Airbrush tanning can get some convincing color in your face, instead of the oompa-loompa solutions found on the market. It lasts from ten days to two weeks. For a full-body bronze, the charge is ¥6,000; for a partial tan, rates begin at ¥4,000.
An ethereal and relaxing part of the Ho’me experience is candle art, with a selection of candles designed and produced especially for Ho’me by Millie, from Candle Studio Daikanyama. This range of candles, with a handmade feel and vintage texture, are on sale at the salon.

For men and women who believe that having good nails makes a difference, Ken’s Nail is an English-speaking enclave in Azabu-Juban that can do your bidding.
If you’re surprised to hear that men frequent their clean, stylish and professional workplace, then don’t be. Nail care makes an impact on first impressions and self-confidence. At Ken’s, nail care is something people adopt into their regular lifestyle.
Ken’s provides basic care, gel nails, or medical nail care. The basic course involves removing the dry outer cuticle and trimming nails to a good shape and length. Nail art is available in a huge variety of designs and styles depending on what you are going for, and in the form of Bio gel nails which cause less damage.
If you’re concerned about the medical implications of nail problems—most notably pincer nails—the qualified professionals at Ken’s can give you advice, therapy, and after-care advice.
Get multiple treatments with the flat-rate plans. Pincer-nail care costs ¥5,250 per nail. Monthly plans include unlimited hand care, buffing sessions with color (¥8,295) or gel nail treatments with one color (¥12,495; removal fee included) for women, while the men’s plan includes cuticle care and buffing (¥5,145/month). NEPENJI CURLY HAIR SPECIALISTS
Japanese people tend not to have naturally curly hair—so most salons here aren’t experienced in dealing with it. Frizzy folk resident here should seek out the dynamic, all-female staff of Nepenji in Ebisu, Tokyo’s premium curly hair specialist salon.
A former stylist at Lorraine Massey’s famous Deva Salon in the Big Apple, Nepenji’s Kiyoko is an experienced professional. She’ll happily show you Massey’s book of advice for lock-bearing ladies, and explain its contents to you. She’ll also advise on how to make your hair behave, and which products to use. One key point is to use only sulfate-free products. See the ingredient lists on bottles to avoid sodium laurel sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate, or sodium laureate sulfate. Kiyoko will also let you know how to treat your hair on a day-to-day basis to keep it at its best.
A hair consultation and treatment is free with your first cut—all for just ¥8,400. Then, if you get your second cut within four months, it’ll cost ¥6,825. You can also add a hair treatment for just ¥2,100. Nepenji’s newest branch has opened in Aoyama and Kiyoko is available there every Thursday from 1pm to 11pm. Call the Ebisu salon and book your reservation in the new locale. As a Christmas special, Metropolis readers visiting by the end of January will receive a 10%-off voucher.

SUGOROKUYA
If you’re stuck for gift ideas this Christmas, then you’ll be hard pressed not to find something interesting in this quirky board game shop. Sugorokuya has a huge selection of domestic and international games to keep even the most attention-deficient of recipients occupied for an hour, if only because some of the concepts are so imaginative and out-there. There’s your usual Scrabble, Lego, and Tantrix; alternatively you could try String Railway, Incan Gold, Battle Beyond Space, A Fistful of Penguins, or perhaps Flinke Stinker in which you race skunks around the floor. There are games for every occasion, from fun family gatherings to those more intellectual nights where you feel like staying in and watching your crops grow (try Agricola).
The shop lets you sample games before you buy, and can even custom produce games based on original ideas you want to put into practice. There are regular board-game events open to the public to pit your wits or just check out the place first.
On top of that, if you buy one of Sugorokuya’s products before year’s end, you’ll receive the shop’s 2013 edition of their original and superbly illustrated calendar: each one has had a special theme, and this one includes a Where’s Wally-style number-and-letter search through the pictures.

YOYO MARKET
No, it’s not a place to buy ’80s children’s toys consisting of plastic wheels and string. It’s an online supermarket of cheap Costco and IKEA goods you will find it nigh-on-impossible to buy elsewhere—with hundreds of additional Christmas-related products thrown in for the holiday season. Whole turkeys, turkey breasts, spiral-sliced hams, cranberry sauce, stuffing, gravy, Brussels sprouts, wrapping paper, ornaments, candy canes, shortbread, and everything else you could (reasonably) imagine, are all available. There’s also a substantial list of health and organic foods, and even a small selection of imported children’s toys if you need to fill the stockings.
Yoyo Market provides the only English-speaking IKEA delivery service in the country, and you can expect fast service: for most parts of the country, anything ordered before noon on a weekday should arrive in time for lunch the next day. The friendly staff at Yoyo Market also make a point of answering calls personally and have an online chat service on the website. So if it’s been a while since your last hit of Heinz or Kraft products (including Vegemite), then this would be a good starting point.
