Cool! I actually went to that place in 2010 (http://www.haikyo.org/?p=123). This place is greater than just this picture, the slide is nicer from outside, and there is a huge pool in the main building, with an impressive view.

i went here a while back with the month-old magazine in hand. not really much there at all, just a bummed out looking place but was an interesting article. I went to ha chan too, right opposite the bus stop (take the bus, dont walk)
ha-chan herself had no idea about the article and was really pleased to hear, i gave her the clipping i brought.
i had a lot of fun in that place with the locals singing karaoke.

This is the kind of article I would love to see more of in Metropolis. A real atmosphere piece that's actually not tied to promoting some sponsor or advertiser for a change. A reason at last to pick up this magazine and read it! Well written too. More !

Gangsters, blackmarkets and doss-houses - sounds a lot like Yokohama's Kotobukicho district (http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/fl20100706zg.html) - right down to the recent attempts to lure in foreign backpackers...

I can recommend the tour at of Suntory's Yamazaki distillery. The tour is well organised and you can sample the whisky - Foreigners might get more than just one glass of it ;)

BTW: Despite being in Osaka Prefecture, JR Yamazaki Station is only a 15 minutes ride from Kyoto!

Nice round-up of Japanese drams.

There's a longer history of the Yoichi distillery (and the Japanese husband and Scottish wife who founded it) over at: http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/fl20101128x1.html

Raise a glass to Masataka and Rita Taketsuru if you're ever in Hokkaido,

One of the few good places for a late drink in Nagasaki is Bar Nagare and (in the same building) Nagare no Hanare. The former (2F) is an excellent place and has very friendly owners. Open 7pm-3am. Next streetcar stop: Kankodori. http://www.nagasaki-yokanavi.net/shop/shop.shtml?s=891

Haikyo Corner completely changed how I look at Japan. Now I stop and admire the dilapidated, abandoned sites around me as a source of musing and beauty in an unconstructed fashion. This IS my favorite part of Met.

Yes, the walking path picks up again in the Shinjuku area and runs along the river to Shimo-Ochiai (station on the Seibu Shinjuku Line). This stretch of the river is very green with lots of trees and little parks. Best in spring for there are lots of cherry trees; good shade in summer; autumn leaves later in the year.
It appears for a bit in the Takadanobaba area but picks up again in the Waseda area near Waseda Station of the Arakawa Tram Line. This is my favourite stretch. Same here, best in spring around cherry blossom season but lots of shade in summer.
Just before Iidabashi is the Toppan Building, one of Japan's main printing companies. They house an interesting Printing Museum.
From Iidabashi to Ochanomizu it is mainly pedestrian paths that follow the road along the river.

There is a nice walking path along the river from Inokashira Koen through Nakano. It's been a while, but I think it disappears for a bit before you pick it up again running parallel to the Chuo Line after Shinjuku. I used to live right along it in Takaido. My favorite part is between Kichijoji and Mitakadai. Great walk/ride!
